The Papago (now called Tohono O’odham) have been weaving baskets for at least 2000 years. Although the reason for weaving has changed through the years, the Tohono O’odham are still using the same weaving styles as their ancestors. Learn to prepare bear grass, do a traditional Papago basket-start, and coil with yucca and bear grass. | Instructor Bio: Sharie has been teaching basketry in Arizona since 1985. After collecting Papago baskets years ago, she has used them as an inspiration to make coiled basket using yucca and bear grass, pine needles, broom corn and date palm inflorescence. |
