Weftover Fiber Art GuildThe Story Behind Our Dragon Yarnby Ruthann McCaulley Designed especially for our fiber group - we now have a unique mascot spun from dragon fiber - Dragon Yarn.Dragons shed some fiber every Spring - which is a good thing because shearing them would present problems. There are two highly distinctive things about dragon fiber. The first is the big difference between the coat at first shedding and the coat of an adult. The first coat bears a distinct resemblance to Pima Cotton, creamy white with long colorful guard hairs being quite pronounced. The coat of an adult is medium gray and closely resembles wool. Guard hair is even more abundant. The second distinctive characteristic of dragon fiber is the guard hair. It is colorful, about 3 inches long and quite soft, much like rayon "eyelash". |
